TOKYO - Japan's Cabinet minister in charge of financial services and the privatization of the postal system was found dead at his home on Monday, police said.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that the body of Tadahiro Matsushita, the minister of postal reforms and financial services, was found at his residence in Tokyo. He was 73. Police are investigating the cause of death.

Police had no further comment. Public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News agency reported that they were investigating possible suicide.

Matsushita was appointed to the post in June by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

関係者によると、１２日発売予定の週刊新潮が松下金融相の女性問題に関する記事を掲載するといい、同署は関連を調べる。

同誌編集部は「記事を報じているのは事実。亡くなられたと聞いて驚いている」などとしている。

　「しっかりやっていくからな」。松下氏は８、９日に地元の鹿児島県に戻り、懸案の日本郵政の幹部人事について、こう意気込みを語っていたという。

　国民新党鹿児島県支部の吉原範雄幹事長（７５）によると、妻とともに地元入りし、薩摩川内（せんだい）、霧島両市で郵便局関係者のソフトボール大会などに顔を出した。吉原さんは「自殺するようなそぶりはまったくなかった。どういうことなのか…」と驚いていた。

　松下氏は温厚な人柄で知られるが、武闘派の側面も。平成１７年には郵政民営化法案に反対し自民の公認が得られずに落選した。

　一方、女性の問題について報じる予定の週刊誌は１２日発売号の「週刊新潮」。記事では、約２０年間交際していた女性の存在を指摘する予定で、最近、松下氏と女性の間で別れ話が持ち上がり、こじれていたという。同誌編集部は「亡くなられたと聞いて驚いています。お悔やみ申し上げます」とコメントした。

　松下氏の自宅がある東京都江東区東雲（しののめ）の５４階建てマンション前には、警察車両が相次いで駆けつけた。２８階に住む男性（５５）は「あいさつすると丁寧に返してくれる腰の低い方だった」と話した。マンションのロビーには、松下氏が大臣就任記念に贈られたとみられるコチョウランが飾られていたという。
